Visit Berlin, Not Enough Hours in the Day

Hey Dustin here!  This past October I had the opportunity to visit Berlin Germany’s capital. While the purpose of my visit wasn’t labeled “pleasure”, we were able to do a little exploring in the history-packed city, and I want to share that experience with you. I only scratched the surface of what Berlin is about and has to offer, so this post is only meant to serve as a snapshot into the parts of the city I was privileged to visit.

City of Dreamers

I find myself struggling to pinpoint an adjective to define the culture in Berlin…and I think this is one of the beauties of the city. Berlin has been the stage for some of the darkest moments in modern history, and in response has placed markers all over the city to serve as everyday reminders of the past to not be repeated. A place that was once defined by the atrocities that occurred within its walls, now provides an open space for people to redefine themselves and the city they call home. While “who Berlin is” is open for interpretation, it is loud and clear “who Berlin is NOT anymore”, and this is the unifying cry of the city.

A new wall of rusty steel rods was erected to mark the line where the wall once stood.

Markers outline the old escape tunnels that litter the area around the wall.

The Wall

Remnants of the Berlin Wall cut through the capital making it impossible to traverse the streets without being reminded of the not-so-distant past. Some sections of the remaining wall have been preserved, appearing much like they did around 60 years ago.  Others serve as a canvas for some pretty inspired street art, some commissioned and some not as much.

Festival of Lights

Every fall, Berlin becomes the city of light art in a multi-week event called the Festival of Lights. Light productions from national and international artists are displayed on the world-famous landmarks, monuments, buildings and squares of the capital. I was fortunate enough to see this artistic display, and it did not disappoint!

Need to See

Like I said, I only scratched the surface, but here are a few things you should check out:

Berlin Wall Memorial / Surrounding Area
Foundations of guard towers that once stood between the walls
Brandenburg Gate
Mauerpark

I recommend visiting Mauerpark on Sunday, as you will find not only an enormous outdoor market/flea market, but also the famous karaoke in the park. I could easily spend the day wandering aisles of the market and people-watching in the crowds of thousands of locals and tourists singing popular tunes with one voice. So grab a pint and some currywurst, and get lost in the crowd.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Probably the the most creative and impactful memorials I’ve experienced, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is a must see for anyone visiting Berlin. The memorial creates a space for the viewer to form his/her own interpretation and walk away having had a completely unique experience.

“The uneven concrete floor gives many visitor a moment of giddiness or even uncertainty. Its openness and abstractness give you space to confront the topic in your own personal way.” – Visit Berlin

Reichstag Building / Parliament
Street Art

Wherever you go in Berlin, you will find street art, a.k.a. “graffiti”, paralleled by no other place. The city is one enormous canvas, and is a true work of art…so just explore.

A Bed for the Night

I can’t really speak to all the places you could/should stay while in Berlin, BUT I can easily recommend the hostel we stayed in, Rix House. Located in the Berlin district of Neukölln, it is a quick 5 minute walk to the U-Bahn, Berlin’s subway system. When it comes to the rooms, there are a variety of sizes, each coming with its own [clean] bathroom. I could easily call Rix House “home” for a couple of weeks!

Refuel and Relax

Literally around the corner from Rix House, you will find the best cafe in Berlin, Prachtwerk. While the city is littered with cafes, you won’t find one that competes with the atmosphere or selection. With amazing brunch and great specialty coffee, this is the perfect spot to start every morning. It offers live music almost daily, and every Wednesday night open mic night brings in up-and-coming artist from all over the city.

Conclusion

Berlin is a beautiful city, with a rich culture and history for days! The city has so much more to show me, and I have so much more to take in. I have a feeling that Berlin is going to be seeing more of me…
