DC Fashion: Packing to Visit the Nation’s Capitol

The Capitol Visit Washington D.C.

When you think of DC fashion there is not anything specific that comes to mind. LA is beach fashion. NYC you think of black. What do you think of you think of when you think of DC fashion… business suits? And how do you even begin to pack for a visit to the Nation’s Capitol?

Though we get 4 seasons in the District, it is still hard to figure out how to pack for a vacation here. I have put together some ideas of outfits for every season. These are a few things that I wear during the year and some things I would suggest packing.

Georgetown

We are all about being real here at Awkward Together. I will be showing you some items from my personal wardrobe so they will have some wear to them. I will be sticking with a more neutral color palette for my suggestions as I only own black and neutrals. Color scares me but black makes me feel pretty. Don’t be afraid to add some color if it is your personality. DC is not scared of color, just me.

I also want to mention that I shop for clothing about 90% thrift/ consignment and about 10% new. To each their own, but I love the money I save. A bonus is also doing my small part to help the environment. Here are some local consignment stores in DC I like: Buffalo Exchange, Clothes Encounters DC, Current Boutique, Secondi, and Reddz Trading. I also am a huge fan of Thredup and The RealReal for online consignment shopping.

Spring

The weather is very unpredictable at this time of year. It can be cool and windy where you need many layers. It can be hot and humid were you will wish you were wearing shorts. From sunny in the morning to raining in the afternoon. ALL IN ONE DAY. Be prepared for all eventualities.

**Quick reminder that I thrift most of my wardrobe so everything I suggest in this post is what I could find that was close to what I thrifted. But I did find what I paid new for if possible. I also add in extra suggestions in certain seasons.**

Tips

  • Bring layers and a bag to carry around the layers. You might shed them as you start your adventures, but not having something to put them in is frustrating.
  • Bring a raincoat and one umbrella per person. Walking from one attraction to another takes a long time. When you add in the rain the mix, sharing rain gear makes it miserable. If you are traveling with a stroller I would bring a rain covering for it as well.

Summer

It is hot and humid ALL THE TIME. There are lots of tourists. Attractions themselves are close quarters for the most part. There is some shade on the National Mall, and the Smithsonian Museums are a great respite from the heat. Just remember there will be lines to enter attractions, and immediate access to air conditioning is rare. In addition to packing the right clothing, pack other essentials including water bottles, sunscreen, mosquito repellant, sunglasses, and a hat if you need extra protection.

Finding photos of myself in our summer outings was very challenging. It is very clear from my closet and photo library : I love fall- winter fashion way more.

Tips:

  • Pick light and breathable fabrics. The heavier the pieces, the worse in the humidity.
  • You will get hot and sweat outside, but then once inside get cold due to the air conditioning. If you are prone to being cold anyway I would suggest a sweater or scarf to use as a shrug indoors.

Fall

Fall in DC is my favorite time of year weather wise. October is my pick month to travel. There is not the pollen problem of spring and more likeliness that the weather will be more crisp than humid. While you do get the random changes in temps , I find it more tolerable in the fall. And also I love a good start of boot season.

Tips:

  • Still bring rain gear like you would in spring. And bring the layers as well.
  • Bring a beanie, gloves, and a scarf you like/ that keeps you warm. The wind in the fall can really take the temp down quickly. And no one enjoys a city with cold hands or ears. These are things easily stored in a purse or backpack.
  • If it looks like your trip will be pretty chilly also consider warm tights or leggings under pants to cut out wind (especially if you want to bike or scooter anywhere in the cold.)

Winter

Winter vacations are not everyone’s cup of tea. I, however, believe that if you layer enough it is an amazing time to tour DC. The temps drop low but it is the wind that will get you. If you are willing to visit in the winter, the opportunity to see DC covered in snow is amazing.

Tips:

  • A heavy coat is a must. When picking out a coat to bring make sure it has a hood, is at least water resistant, and big enough to layer under.
  • Bring hats. Or your favorite WARM hat. In the winter I live in a great fitting black beanie. So warm and they are pretty freaking cute.

Finally

Always remember that you will be walking crazy miles and your steps will add up quickly. The main thing is to make sure your shoes are comfortable. While I love fashion, if your feet hurt nothing matters. Also, follow the tried and true advice to stick to a color palette that you can mix and match items to create multiple outfits with the same items.

We love compiling places for you to visit. If you are eager to start planning the itinerary of your trip as well; check out this post we wrote about planning your DC adventure.

Until next time!
