DC Art Museums. Art, Art & More Art

With our bucket list for DC being way longer than we thought, and with it seeming to grow with every conversation we have with other people, we got started asap by going out on Saturday by checking out some DC art museums.

With it still being cooler and windy, we picked going to the Hirshhorn Museum which is a part of the Smithsonian Museums.  It focuses on modern art and has an extensive sculpture garden.  We are not modern art people generally, but we did appreciate the exhibit Rafael Lozano- Hemmer’s Pulse.  It is an interactive exhibit that I highly recommend.  From water to lightbulbs it kept me on my toes.  It is only at the Hirshhorn until the end of April 2019 so go see it while you can!  We only toured the museum not the garden, as I think Dustin had hit his modern art limit.  We are definitely classic art people.  But I might head back at some point, as I think there is a Rodin or 2 in the garden.  Who doesn’t love a Rodin sculpture in its natural element?

I could not help but get excited to see this art installation of Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin.  Dustin appreciated that I was excited!

** For all the parents out there.  I don’t know if it is just on the weekend, that day we went, or what but there was so much for kids/ families.  There were interactive music, science and art stations all over the museum.  **

We were in and out of the Hirshhorn within about an hour.  So we headed towards the National Gallery of Art and tried to explore all the rooms we have not before.  I also have yet to see a Mondrian in DC so I was very excited!!  There are 2 buildings to the National Gallery of Art, with the older classics in one and modern in the East building.  My favorite rooms in an art museum will always be the impressionist galleries and the furniture galleries.  We saw both with a quick stop in the East building to see a Mondrian and aWarhol!  (Sometimes I can’t believe this is my life that I get to live a scooter/ metro ride away from Degas!!)

A day rounded out with some solid food at an Irish Pub in our neighborhood solidified a rather touristy day.  I used to go to Target to end of the aisle shop when I needed a stress reliever, but now that I am living in a city with all these art museums, I might have found a newer/ cheaper stress reliever.

On to the next weekend where we take on another bucket list item.  TBD….
