A Quick Visit to Mount Vernon

One of my favorite things about living in DC is people we love come and visit this place we call home. I love that we now live in a place filled with so much history and things to do that people want to visit our home. It gives us a chance to revisit some places we have seen and also check some things off our bucket list. We showed Dustin’s sister and her family some of our favorite places in DC and they took us to visit Mount Vernon.

Tips for planning your trip to visit Mount Vernon:

  1. Buy tickets ahead of time to secure your timed tour through the main house. It saves time the day of and also gives you the opportunity to pick the best time for you.
  2. There is a lot of walking and ground to see. Wear tennis shoes and plan on this taking a few hours at least.
  3. Make time to see it all. The many buildings, the museum (George Washington’s not so wooden teeth), the gardens, and the burial sites.
  4. It is a beautiful drive from the city, but be forewarned it is a drive. While DC itself is super walkable with great public transportation; getting to Mount Vernon will require some planning. If you are interested in arriving by boat there is one that will take you from Alexandria to Mount Vernon. From what I hear it is worth checking out.
  5. You are not allowed to take pictures inside the main house. Sad but true. Although just experiencing without photography is also a really cool experience.

Update: We wrote another post where we were able to visit a second time at the holidays.
